***WEEKLY UPDATE***

Update Friday 22nd February 2019

There is lots happening in the Club at the moment. Please see below for some of the details.

JOKER:
Michael Rogan was the lucky man this week with his envelope being pulled out. Michael picked the number 23 which turned out to be the 2 of Diamonds. As a result Michael wins €50. The wine winners were Irene O’Reilly, Declan Collins and Edel McDermott. These can be collected behind the bar.
This week’s jackpot is now at a massive €3,300. The next draw will be on Sunday 24th after the Social Golf

SOCIAL GOLF:
Sunday next sees the second last Sunday Social golf of the season. This will take place at the slightly later time of 2:00pm. The Social will then finish up on the 31st of March and will recommence on the Friday night after Easter (26th April). Hopefully at that stage there will be long bright warm evenings and the golf and the fun will be great.

GET INTO GOLF:
The club will again be running it’s Get into Golf program this year. This will commence on Tuesday 30th April and names are now being taken in the Pro Shop for this. The cost will again be €100 for the 6 week course. Should you know of anybody that may be interested in taking part please persuade them to contact either Rick or Paul in the Proshop. This is a fantastic way of recruiting new members to the club so the more we can get involved in this the better.

OPEN COMPETITIONS:
It has been agreed by Council that the timesheets for the Open competitions will open earlier than normal in order to allow people get themselves organised and to invite visitors. As a result timesheets will open circa 1 month before the date of the Competitions. The Easter competitions will go live this afternoon. For team events on Open Weekends, there will be prizes (depending on the number of entrants) for all male, all female and mixed teams. It is hoped that members will support the club by inviting visitors to play in these Open competitions.

INTERCLUB:
This Saturday sees the start of the action in the Inter Club matches. Our Men are in action in the All Ireland Fourball competition against Rathcore with 3 matches at home and 2 away. The matches start at 12:30pm and all support would be welcomed. The Leinster Finals of this competition will be held in Black Bush so it would be great if this team could progress to these.
Conor Walsh is looking for any male golfers who had a minimum handicap of 9 or higher last year to play in the Provincial Towns Cup. The first round of this will be against Kilcock on the 6th April. If you are interested please contact Conor

NEW TRAINEE GREEN KEEPER REQUIRED:
A vacancy has arisen amongst the course staff for a new trainee green keeper. This will be a full time position and no experience is required as full training will be provided. The successful individual will gain experience in all Golf course maintenance procedures and machinery maintenance. If you know of anybody that may be interested ask them to contact Paul Farrell, Course Superintendent, Black Bush Golf Club. The closing date for applications is 12th April. 

ADVERTISING:
You may have heard the ad’s on LMFM or you may have had a flyer dropped through your door but the message is certainly getting out there that Black Bush is open for business. Posters will also be appearing shortly in relation to the Get into Golf. However, the best form of advertising is word of mouth. If you can promote the club to colleagues and friends, a new member or a society booking may ensue. They may only visit the club for a drink and some food but they may leave being so impressed that they want to join.

BUNNIES AND BLUES:
On Monday 1st April the Bunnies and Blues will re-commence for the summer months. These are separate competitions but the general format is the same. Both are played over 9 holes on Monday evenings, entry is €3, they have prizes on the night and also have a very successful leagues for the duration of the summer. 
The Bunnies caters for the 18+ handicaps, guests are welcome but juniors and Students can’t take part. There is a timesheet in operation from 3:00pm onwards but you can play earlier in the day with arrangement with the Pro Shop. The league will be decided by the best 10 cards between 29th April and 7th September and is confined to members. Finally there will be 4 special nights from which your 3 best cards will count towards special prizes. In summary, the more you play the better your chances of winning!
The Blues caters for all handicaps, however anybody over 18 handicap must play off 18. The Blue tees are used (hence the name) and again there are league prizes similar to the Bunnies. Guests are always welcome. There is a special 2’s pot for which all participants are eligible. Prizes will be presented on the night.
Why not get into a Monday night habit and play in one of these competitions. Remember they start on the 1st April and timesheets are available a week in advance.

Updates for this week:

BAR OPENING:
The Bar and Restaurant will be closed today Wednesday (13th March). Normal service will resume again on Thursday.

OPEN COMPETITIONS:
This weekend we will have open competitions all weekend. Please feel free to invite any friends along. On Saturday it’s singles and there will be separate competitions for the men’s and ladies. There are team events on Sunday and Monday and prizes for these will be as follows: Best Overall, Best Ladies, Best Gents and Best Mixed. This will be the same for the rest of the Year for Open events. 

JOKER:
Pat Connolly was the lucky man this week with his envelope being pulled out. Pat picked the number 39 which turned out to be the Queen of Spades. As a result Pat wins €100. The wine winners were Monica O’Hagan, JP Kelly and Kieran Dunne. These can be collected behind the bar.  
This week’s jackpot is now at €3,200 so start playing! The next draw will be on Bank Holiday Monday 18th March at 6:00pm. Good luck in finding it.

TRAFFIC DISRUPTION:
Members should be aware that there are road works in Dunshaughlin at the moment and it is likely that these will continue for a number of weeks. As a result members should plan their journeys accordingly so that they do not miss their tee times.

SUGGESTIONS:
There were 3 suggestions received during the last month. These were reviewed by Council at their last meeting and the responses are as follows:
1. Mens Showers need fixing. No hot water on Sunday mornings – on / off for last 6 months. – There has been an issue with the immersion switch tripping. This has been identified and will be checked on Friday’s to ensure that there is hot water on Sundays.

2. To give Joe, some sort of bonus as he is working very hard to keep everyone happy in the bar. He is always so cheerful regardless of how many people he has to look after. – The contribution of all staff to the success of Black Bush Golf Club is very much appreciated by both Council and the members. Staff wages and any bonuses are closely monitored by the Honorary Treasurer and he along with the Honorary Secretary liaise with staff in relation to these.

3. Get the cabinet on the landing cleaned, it’s not very nice looking. If visitors come to the club, and see it as it is at the moment, very dusty. – A clean up of this has been organised and will be put on the weekly cleaning roster going forward.

Update Friday 8th March

INFORMATION NIGHT:
Thanks to all that attended the second information night last Monday night. The slides from the presentation are on available to view on the Strategic Plan Notice Board which is located just outside the function room downstairs. Any feedback would be more than welcomed by Pat McLaughlin and his team. 

TV:
The TV in the main bar is up and running again. It currently has all of the normal basic channels. Why not come down over the weekend and watch some of the Rugby? 

PRIZE GIVING:
The Men’s prize giving will take place on this Sunday (10th March) at 7:00pm. Prizes will be presented for the two spring leagues and all the weekend prizes from January 19th to March 10th inclusive. 
The Ladies prize giving will take place on Tuesday evening (12th March) at 7:00pm. Prizes will be presented for the December / January re-entries, the Pairs Competitions, the Singles re-entries and last Tuesday’s 18 Hole competition.
If you are a prize winner please make every effort to attend these presentations.

JOKER:
The Joker Jackpot will be €3,100 this weekend and the draw will take place after the Ireland v France Rugby match. Why not come down and cheer on the boys in green and maybe go home with the Joker Jackpot. Family and Friends also welcome to take part.

SOCIETIES:
The Society golfing season kicks off in Black Bush this week with 2 societies visiting us. On Saturday the Colwell Golf Society will be here and on Monday the Dublin Journalists will be returning for their annual outing. If you see any members of these societies around the clubhouse or the course give them a nice hello to make them feel welcome.

Update Friday 1st March

CAPTAINS DRIVE IN:
Tomorrow sees the official start to the golf season with the Captains’ Drive-in taking place. The place has been decorated and everything is set for a great day. Timesheets are very busy but there are still a few places available. Even if you can’t make it for the golf or the food why not come along and see the Captains Tee it up. They will Tee off at circa 1:15pm. Here’s hoping they all go straight down the middle.

Best wishes to Captain Declan, Lady Captain Miriam and Junior Captain Sean for a great day and year.

JOKER:
With the Captains Drive in taking place on Saturday, it has been decided to move the Joker draw to Saturday this week as well. The Jackpot has been increased to €3,000 which is starting to get ever closer to a “biggest ever”! The excitement should be fantastic on Saturday evening when the winning envelope will be drawn. Will it be yours ?

DIARY:
Great news! The diaries are now available in the clubhouse and this year they are FREE to members. However, we would request that people only take one for themselves so that there is enough for everybody. Make sure you get yours so that you can plan your golf season. 

INFORMATION NIGHT:
A very informative session was held on Wednesday night last in relation to the future governance of the club. The session lasted just over an hour but there was loads packed into this. Unfortunately numbers in attendance were low but it was a bad night weather wise. Another session is planned for Monday night at 8:00pm and hopefully there will be more in attendance. 

WEEKEND GOLF:
The course for the week ahead is B&C. Courses will be rotated on a weekly basis for the year to ensure that all nines get equal usage.
Saturday is dedicated to the Captains Drive in.
Sunday sees the first 18 hole competition of the season with a singles competition taking place.

Update Tuesday 26th February

INFORMATION NIGHT:
Tomorrow night sees the first of the information meetings in relation to the future governance of the club. This is a great chance for all members to have a say in what is a very important facet of the club. The Governance Committee have put a lot of effort into progressing this so it would be great if members could come along, listen to what the Committee have to say and then provide feedback. 8:00pm kick off.

LATE OPENING:
The Office will remain open late on Wednesday evening to facilitate any members that are attending the information night and wish to pay any of their outstanding annual subscriptions. It will be open until 8:00pm. Membership stickers can also be collected at that stage.

CAPTAINS’ DRIVE IN:
Timesheets are filling up quickly for this event and are almost full with almost 160 members and guests already down. Timesheets are available on A, B and C course and are only being used to indicate that you are playing and eating. The Dinner list is now full. If you are not staying for the food please let Libby Smith know otherwise you will be charged. Members Competition Purse will be charged on Monday 4th. 

JOKER:
Colm Meleady was lucky this week with his envelope being pulled out. Colm picked the number 47 which turned out to be the 10 of Hearts. As a result Colm wins €50. The wine winners were Michael Kane, Finbarr Marsden & Pat Smith.

This week’s jackpot has now hit €3,000 so start dreaming! As the Captains’ Drive in, takes place on Saturday it has been agreed that the Joker draw will be moved to Saturday this week. Remember, the Joker is open to all members, family, friends and guests so why not give it a go. All funds raised go towards Course Development.

CAPTAINS DRIVE IN:

INFORMATION NIGHTS:
The first of the information nights in relation to the future governance of the club will take place on Wednesday next 27th February and will start at 8:00pm. These are open to all members so hopefully we will see a good turn-out.

WEEKEND GOLF:
Last weekend of the leagues this weekend. Singles on Saturday and the Pairs on Sunday. Ladies Hour on Saturday and Social on Sunday. Fine weather forecast so no excuses.

JOKER:
The Jackpot is now sitting at €2,800 and the draw will take place this Sunday after Social Golf. It’s not anything like the figure the sisters from the Naul won during the week but I know I for one would be quite happy if my envelope was drawn. Here’s hoping.

Here are a few items which may be of interest

CAPTAINS DRIVE IN:
The big day is nearly here. Saturday 2nd March is the date. Hopefully the weather will be kind and there will be lots of fun and golf. Please come out and wish your new captains all the best for the new golfing season. Bookings can be made on BRS and there is still plenty of space on the timesheets.

3 & 5 YEAR MEMBERSHIPS:
Thanks to all who asked to be considered for both the 3 and 5 year memberships. All applicants have been successful. There are still some vacancies for these so if anybody else is interested please contact the office for information.

LADIES COMPETITIONS:
From Thursday 7th March the ladies will run competitions in conjunction with the men’s competitions for both Senior’s and Under 50’s. These will be open competitions so please encourage friends and colleagues to support these events.

JOKER:
This week Eileen Murray’s envelope was pulled and she selected the number 44. Unfortunately or fortunately for Eileen, I’m not sure which, it was the Ace of Spades that was hidden behind this number so Eileen wins €100. The wine winners were Anne Patterson, Rob Murray and Seamus Ryan.
This now means that this week’s jackpot is a whopping €2,800. Remember, the Joker is open to all members, family, friends and guests so why not give it a go this week.

GET INTO GOLF:
The club will again be running a golf program this year. This will start on Tuesday 30th April and will run for 6 weeks. The cost will again be €100 and all equipment will be provided if required. If you know of anybody interested they can register by either calling the Proshop or the office.

Update Friday 15th February 2019

PICTURES AND PHOTOS ARE UP:
For those that have been in the club over the last few days you will hopefully have noticed that all of the photos, pictures and pennants are back on the walls in the Bar and Annex. I am sure all members will be delighted to see these back up again. Well done to all those that helped to put them back up.

INFORMATION MEETINGS:
As mentioned in the bulletin on Tuesday, Information meetings in relation to the future governance of the club will take place on both Wednesday 27th February and Monday 4th March. These meetings will start at 8pm and are scheduled on different nights so that members have the option of attending one of the sessions. It is also very important to point out that these information meetings are for ALL members not just full members.

3 & 5 YEAR MEMBERSHIPS:
Last chance! Closing date is Monday. This is a great chance to save yourself some money and help the club at the same time.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP:
There have been some queries in recent weeks in relation to the access to the course that Associate Members have. Associate members can play in all relevant mid-week competitions (depending on availability). Associate members can play competition golf on Saturday in Ladies Hour. Associate Members can play in Open competitions at weekends. Casual golf (note, not competition golf) can be played any day of the week outside of competition times. If competition timesheets are empty Associate Members cannot play during these competition times. We hope that this clarifies matters.

DIARY:
Members will be delighted to hear that the diary is almost ready to go to print. It is hoped that it will be available for distribution on the day of the Captains Drive in. There will be no charge for the diary this year.

CAPTAINS DRIVE IN:
This year the Captains Drive in will take place on Saturday 2nd March. The format of the day will be as follows:

  • Sign-in at 11:45am
  • Captains’ arrive at 12:30pm
  • Captains’ Drive in at 1:15pm
  • Golf – Shotgun start at 1:45pm
  • Buffet served at 5:00pm
  • Followed by presentation of prizes and entertainment 

Timesheets are now open on BRS so that people can indicate that they will be participating on the day.

3 & 5 YEAR MEMBERSHIPS:
Reminder that the closing date for applications is Monday 18th February at 9am. 

ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS:
Annual subscriptions are now due. If you have not made arrangements to pay your subscriptions please contact the office to arrange same. 

JOKER:
There was a first this week when there were joint winners of the Joker. Pauline Fenton & Marie Doherty tried their luck together and it paid off to a degree. Their envelope was pulled and they selected the number 27. Unfortunately for Pauline and Marie it was the Two of Spades that was hidden behind this number so the ladies get €25 each. The wine winners were Paul O’Leary, Ciaran Dunne and Bren Cowman.

This now means that this week’s jackpot is a whopping €2,700. Remember, the Joker is open to all members, family, friends and guests so why not give it a go this week.

Update Monday 28th January 2019

YOGA:
A new Yoga Course commences on Monday 4th February at 7:30. The cost is €65 for 6 weeks lessons.  Sign-up sheets are in the locker rooms so please place you name on these if you are interested in taking part. All are welcome to these sessions.

SWINGING 60’S LEAGUE:
The Swinging 60’s Spring league kicks off this Tuesday (29th January). This will be run over 12 weeks and will be played over 9 holes each week. The best 6 cards over the 12 weeks will count towards the league. Full details are available on the notice board in the men’s locker room.

TIMESHEETS:
Members are asked, where at all possible, that they place their names on timesheets when playing casual golf. This will assist in the management of tee times etc. and will give a better indication of how much golf is actually being played on the course. Your assistance in this is much appreciated.

SUGGESTIONS:
To date 8 suggestions have been placed in the suggestion boxes. These were reviewed at the last council meeting and responses were requested from the various committees. Full details are available on the document sent as an attachment to members via BRS.

JOKER:
This week Donal Doherty’s envelope was pulled from the drum. Donal selected the number 22. The Ace of Clubs was behind the number 22 and so Donal wins €100. The Jackpot is now €2,500
The wine winners were Frank Conroy, Aidan O’Connell and Brian McCleary.
Next weeks draw will take place after Social Golf on Sunday afternoon.

3 & 5 YEAR MEMBERSHIPS:
The club is offering members the chance to pay either 3 or 5 years membership, upfront, at a reduced rate. The offer will be limited to 20 members and preference will be given to 1) Full members and 2) those looking for 5 Year memberships.

The price will be a multiple of the current subscription rate.  For example for a full member the cost will be €3,480 for 3 years (€1,160 x3) or €5,800 for 5 years (€1,160 x 5).

The current price of membership equates to €3,777 for 3 years (€1,259 (€1,160 Sub + 24 GUI + 25 Insurance + 50 Bar Levy) x 3)  and €6,295 over 5 years (€1,259 (€1,160 Sub + €24 GUI + €25 Insurance + €50 Bar Levy) x 5) which means savings to members of €297 and 495 respectively. The advantages for members are as follows:

The price is set so the member is protected against any fee increases;
Bar Levy of €50 is included each year;
Member is protected against any levies during the period;
€50 Bar purse credit is included each year;
Pro Rata refund available should member need to give up golf though injury or moving away;
Pro Rata refund available to estate on death of member;
Subscriptions already paid for 2019 will be netted off fee due;
Any fee reductions will be passed to members.

Closing date for applications is Monday 18th February at 9am. Applications, via email or post should be forwarded to Jim Quinn, Black Bush Golf Club (jim@blackbushgolfclub.ie). Successful applicants will be notified by Friday 22nd February and must pay the amount due by 28th February or their offer will be provided to another applicant.

TEMPORARY GREENS:
Members are asked to protect the temporary greens on the course. They are currently marked out and while, fortunately enough, they have not been used much this year, a time may come when we will have to use them so it is important that they are good in condition. As a result we would ask members not to walk on these areas, let trollies go across them or drive buggies over them. Your support in this is much appreciated.

NEW GUI INTERCLUB COMPETITION:
The Shield: This is a new GUI Fourball Interclub competition which caters for handicaps from 15 upwards with a combination of 34 max. Club members who are interested in competing in this competition should either fill in their name on the sheets in the locker room or contact Pat Smyth (086 2543877) smythpat53@gmail.com or Dave McDonnell (087 0901980) davidmcdonnell_1953@yahoo.ie who are managing the team.

The Sunday Social takes place on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm with the Joker draw taking place afterwards for a jackpot of €2,400

ONE GOVERNING BODY:
After landmark votes at separate meetings held on Saturday last, the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU) (100% in favour of the proposal) and the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) (94% in favour of the proposal) have formally approved the establishment of Golf Ireland.

This now means the game of golf in Ireland will, for the first time, have an all-inclusive governing body.  

A Transition Period will immediately commence, with the intention for this to culminate with the first AGM and regional meetings of Golf Ireland happening in the final quarter of 2020, paving the way for the organisation to ‘go live’ on 1 January 2021.

The GUI and ILGU will continue to operate through the Transition Period with the transfer of functions and staff to Golf Ireland prior to the “go live” date for the new organisation.  It should be noted that this relates to the governing of golf in Ireland and should have no direct impact on the running of Black Bush Golf Club. It will however provide a single point of contact for assistance in relation to both men’s and ladies golf.

ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS:
Invoices have been now issued to all members in relation to their 2019 Annual Subscriptions. If you have not received yours please contact the office and they will forward another copy to you. We would encourage people to pay their subscriptions as soon as possible. There are a number of different ways that the Subscription can be paid e.g. Cash, Draft, Cheque, Credit Card, Debit Card, Standing order or Direct Debit. We would also like to thank all of those that have already either paid their fees or have put payment arrangements in place.

SUGGESTION BOXES:
Members are reminded that suggestion boxes are in place both in the main bar and outside the office. All suggestions are welcomed and they can cover anything to do with the course, clubhouse or anything else to do with the golf club.

HELPERS REQUIRED:
The Mens Competition team are looking for helpers to assist with the card checking duties. Helpers will be required 1 evening a month to check the cards and publish the results. Full training will be provided. It is a great way of helping out in the club and seeing what happens in the background. Why not give it a go? CONGRATULATIONS:
Congratulations go to our own Stephen McCarthy who won the best Gross at the TaylorMade Winter Series @ Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links on the 8th January last. Stephen had a fantastic 1under par score of 70 to win on a countback. Hopefully this form will continue for the season.

GOLF THIS WEEKEND:
Saturday sees the start of the Pairs Spring League. This will be played over 6 weeks but will be played over alternate days, i.e. next week’s event will be held on the Sunday.  Ladies Hour will be between 1pm and 2pm.
Sunday sees the start of the Singles Spring League. This again will be played over 6 weeks and will also be played on alternate days so next week’s round will be held on the Saturday.
Social Golf returns this Sunday at 1:30 with sign in from 1pm. The golf is played in a scramble format so there is no pressure on. Why not use this as an opportunity to get back into the golf for 2019?

JOKER:
The Joker draw will take place after the Social Golf on Sunday. Jackpot is €2,300 this week. 

CATERER WANTED:
The club is currently looking for a caterer to run the restaurant. If any members know of anybody that may be interested can they please ask them to either contact James Maguire or the Office.

SOCIAL:
Now that the days are starting to lengthen and thoughts start to think about golf again the Sunday Social Golf is starting up again. This is played every Sunday afternoon and is a shotgun start at 1:30pm. Sign in is at 1pm and the format is a Scramble. Members and friends are more than welcome and we would like to invite everybody to our season kick off this Sunday. Why not come along for a bit of golf but more importantly some fun and banter.

INTER CLUB:
The team managers are now starting to get things organised for the upcoming interclub matches. These will start in earnest in the late spring and hopefully will continue until the All Ireland finals. The managers are now looking to see who is interested in representing the club in these matches. They would really like to see as many people as possible put their names down to represent the club. Notices are in the locker rooms so please put your name down for the relevant teams, you’d never know, you could be the hero of an All Ireland winning team!

SNOOKER:
There is a snooker room in the clubhouse. All Adult members are most welcome to use this facility. The Club also has a Snooker team that plays in a league with a number of local golf clubs. If anybody is interested in playing then they should contact the office who will forward their details to the relevant people. The Snooker operates, like the golf, on a handicap basis so you don’t need to be like Ronnie O’Sullivan in order to get on the team.

JOKER:
Sean Fitzpatrick’s envelope was pulled from the Drum this week. Sean selected Card Number 4. Behind this the King of Diamonds was hidden so Sean win’s €100.  The wine winners were Vivian Marsden, Gerry Hogan and Sean Fitzpatrick. These can be collected from behind the bar.  The Jackpot next Sunday is a massive €2,300.  Best of luck

RULES NIGHT:
Many thanks to Dympna Conlon who hosted a very comprehensive presentation on the new golf rules last night. The event was very well attended with almost 100 members and guests attending. Remember it is every golfer’s responsibility to know and apply the rules correctly, it can certainly be an advantage to know them in a number of situations.

JUNIORS COACHING:
Junior coaching will commence on Wednesday 6th February and will run for 7 weeks at a cost of €70. There will be a minimum of 2 groups per night (6-7 and 7-8), however if numbers are greater, then another group will be added. These are open to all Juveniles and they do not need to be members to attend. Please contact the Pro Shop to book in.

ADULT COACHING:
Adult coaching will commence on Monday 4th February and will run for 4 weeks at a cost of €80. This is a great way to improve your game and will give you a chance to practice what you have learned before the golf season kicks off in earnest. All the Professionals have coaches so you are never too good to learn. Coaching also takes place on Tuesday evenings. Coaching on Mondays will be 6-7, 7-8 and 8-9 and on Tuesdays it will be at 5-6 and 6-7. Bookings can be made through the Pro Shop and the last day for putting your name down will be 23rd January.

CARDS and FOBS:
Unfortunately the company that provides our Bar Cards and Access FOBS are now charging us €5 for each Card and FOB ordered, as a result of this members who require new cards or FOBS will have this charge passed onto them. The charge for GUI cards remains at €5.00
